Vegan Chocolate Hot Cross Buns

DAIRY-FREE AND VEGAN FRIENDLY - HOT CROSS BUNS

If you're looking for a delicious and indulgent Easter treat that is also vegan-friendly, then vegan chocolate hot cross buns are the perfect choice. These buns are a twist on the classic hot cross buns, which are traditionally made with dried fruit and spices. By adding chocolate to the mix, you get a rich and decadent treat that is perfect for any chocolate lover.

When it comes to serving your vegan chocolate hot cross buns, you can enjoy them warm or cold. They are delicious on their own, but you can also slather them with vegan butter or almond butter for an extra treat.

Eden Vegan’s Chocolate Hot Cross Bun Recipe:

Ingredients:
1 Tbsp dry yeast
1 tsp white sugar
1 1/2 cups of warm oat milk
2 2/3 cups flour
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tsp vanilla essence
1 cup chocolate chunks (I used Whittaker’s 50% 🤤)
1/4 cup oat milk if the mixture needs more liquid

Method:
1. Combine the yeast, white sugar and lukewarm oat milk in a large mixing bowl. Set aside for 5-10 minutes until it starts to foam.
2. Add all remaining ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Make sure to fold the flour well until it reaches a dough consistency.
3. Lightly flour a benchtop and knead the dough for 5-8 minutes before placing in a well-oiled bowl to rise. Set aside in a warm sunny place, covered with a damp tea towel. It should double in size in one hour.
4. Once the dough has risen, divide it into small bun-sized balls. This mixture can make 9 hot cross buns, depending on the size you’d like.
5. Place the rolled dough side by side in a baking paper-lined tray.
6. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees and set the tray of dough aside to rise for a further 30 minutes.
7. Mix 2 tbsp cocoa powder with 2 tsp water in a small mixing bowl and pipe onto the buns in a cross formation.
8. Bake in the oven for 25 minutes, checking and baking until golden. Glaze with maple syrup for a delicious sticky gloss look.
